4 out of 5 stars interesting and useful   May 23, 2010

Very helpful, good advice and easy to follow. I think than any mother can follow the simple advice of Clare and "breastfeed without tears"!

4 out of 5 stars Watch before birth and then use as a reference post birth   April 30, 2010

I have a 3 and a half week old and just got round to watching "breast feeding without tears" after a friend lent it to me, wish I'd watch it before her birth; I was feeding pretty successfully , however it has helped me perfect the latch and has been really useful in things they don't seem to tell you in classes, such as how you know your baby's really finished a feed and how to try to prevent 'snacking' - I'm not feeding all day now! It seems to deal well with issues of sore nipples and difficulties attaching (though I think in this situation it may be useful to have someone who has experience help impliment her methods). I found the advice on expressing and giving a bottle on occassions and the dismissal of nipple/teat confusion helpful. Even though it goes against what you may be told by midwives etc. and current 'fashions', give it a go - it may be just what you need. Of course like any resource of this nature not everything will work for everyone - for example her advice on swaddling would never work for my little one who from day 1 has liked to have her arms free. Take what you find useful and ignore the rest - it's worth getting over anything in the presentation you may find distracting.

5 out of 5 stars I can't praise this DVD highly enough   March 22, 2010

I attended the NCT & Parentcraft breastfeeding courses when pregnant with my daughter and hoped breastfeeding would work for me even though I'd heard all the horror stories from my friends; cracked nipples, mastitis, engorgement etc... From day 1 in the hospital I was given conflicting advice, I never got my daughter latched on successfully, I got mastitis twice and because my daughter didn't gain weight according to the charts the midwives seem to live by we ended up formula feeding her after 2 weeks of hell. I went to a breastfeeding help clinic at our local hospital and can still remember the car journey home where I was in floods of tears, our daughter was screaming for food and my husband was at a total loss as to what to do because even the specialist there couldn't get her latched on successfully.

Second time around I was determined to have another crack at breastfeeding and a friend recommended this DVD to me. I cannot praise it highly enough. I watched it with my husband so he would also be able to see if I was positioning our baby correctly and felt filled with confidence that I could breastfeed this time around. Once our son was born I latched him on myself in the delivery room without the help of our midwife and have not looked back since. My experience this time around is so different and less fraught and I just wish that I had heard of Clare Byam-Cook when I had my daughter. I have recommended this DVD to all my friends having babies, whether they successfully breastfed first time around or for first time Mum's. The technique is consistent rather then having one midwife show you one way, then another suggesting the football hold and another suggesting you lie down. If you want to breastfeed successfully then watch this DVD and I'd also highly recommend her book: "What to expect when you're breastfeeding...and what if you can't".

5 out of 5 stars Really helpful guide   January 11, 2010

My husband and I are expecting our first child, and this DVD has been great to answer a lot of our How To questions and to reassure us that yes, breastfeeding will involve lots of practice and patience, but that we can do it. As a side note, we've also taken a couple breast feeding classes that have slightly different tips and suggestions - like about how on earth you tell when your baby is full. Not that anything in here now seems to be "wrong," but I would highly recommend getting more than one insight into How It's Done so you can figure out what works best for you and your baby.

5 out of 5 stars a life-saver   November 21, 2009

This DVD saved my life - without it I don't think I would have been able to continue breast-feeding my baby girl. I had real difficulties with latching on, and was also finding breastfeeding very painful. None of the advice I had received from midwives and health visitors really helped, and it was still a real struggle. Then I watched this DVD, followed Clare Byam-Cook's advice, and immediately it turned everything around for me. Now I'm breastfeeding exclusively and am really glad I persevered. I really recommend this to anyone who is pregnant and planning to breastfeed, or to anyone who is currently breastfeeding and would like to make it easier or less painful.
