Amazon.co.uk Review
At a time when too many animated films consist of anthropomorphized animals cracking sitcom one-liners and flatulence jokes, the warmth, originality, humor, and unflagging imagination of Up feel as welcome as rain in a desert. Carl Fredericksen (voice by Ed Asner) ranks among the most unlikely heroes in recent animation history. A 78-year-old curmudgeon, he enjoyed his modest life as a balloon seller because he shared it with his adventurous wife Ellie (Ellie Docter). But she died, leaving him with memories and the awareness that they never made their dream journey to Paradise Falls in South America. When well-meaning officials consign Carl to Shady Oaks Retirement Home, he rigs thousands of helium balloons to his house and floats to South America. The journey's scarcely begun when he discovers a stowaway: Russell (Jordan Nagai), a chubby, maladroit Wilderness Explorer Scout who's out to earn his Elderly Assistance Badge. In the tropical jungle, Carl and Russell find more than they bargained for: Charles Muntz (Christopher Plummer), a crazed explorer whose newsreels once inspired Carl and Ellie; Kevin, an exotic bird with a weakness for chocolate; and Dug (Bob Peterson), an endearingly dim golden retriever fitted with a voice box. More importantly, the travelers discover they need each other: Russell needs a (grand)father figure; Carl needs someone to enliven his life without Ellie. Together, they learn that sharing ice-cream cones and counting the passing cars can be more meaningful than feats of daring-do and distant horizons. Pete Docter (Monsters, Inc.) and Bob Peterson direct the film with consummate skill and taste, allowing the poignant moments to unfold without dialogue to Michael Giacchnio's vibrant score. Building on their work in The Incredibles and Ratatouille, the Pixar crew offers nuanced animation of the stylized characters. Even by Pixar's elevated standards, Up is an exceptional film that will appeal of audiences of all ages. Rated PG for some peril and action. --Charles Solomon

5 out of 5 stars Pixar   July 31, 2010
wisey
All Pixar movies are awesome and Up is no exception. Whilst at a lecture by a pixar employee down at the develop conference this year, I was reminded of all the great moments their movies have brought to us over the years. The Pixar facility looks like a very nice place to work. I also like the fact that Pixar choose to do most of their work in Maya. Maya is an awesome application and the fact that Pixar have integrated their own rendering engine 'RenderMan' into the software is great. I noticed from some of the screenshots at Andrew Dayton's lecture that they use Linux. He did also mention that some employees where using max or houdini for some things as well. Compositing allows this kind of integration to be possible.

Technology aside, the storyline in this movie is awesome. Carl Fredricksen, the old man, reminds me very much of somebody I know from the village where I live. I suppose the stories he tells me about becoming a widow just like Carl does in Up, is the reason that the ending to the movie brought a tear to my eye. I don't recommend reading much about the plot, just trust me in believing that this story is very cool, and true to life. Definately a must see.

5 out of 5 stars UP DVD   July 30, 2010

This is a brilliant film for all ages it really tugs on the heart strings to begin with - even my teenage daughter cried at the start wow that is something to be amazed at!!

5 out of 5 stars "Now, you must wear the cone of shame."   July 30, 2010

When details of Pixar's "UP!" were first released there were many sceptical comments written about whether a film about a pensioner would really have any sort of mass appeal, but Pixar have a reputation for going against the grain and producing incredibly fulfilling cinematic experiences (WALL-E for example) and this ranks as one of Pixar's best - and easily one of the best films of the year.

Within the first few minutes of the film we see a young boy in awe of his hero, we then see him growing up and moving through life - and it's not a rose tinted run-of-the-mill Disney life either. He falls in love, gets married and the couple make a home together but discover that they are unable to have children. They constantly save money in order to pay for a dream holiday to Paradise Falls, but over the years as they have to raid their savings in order to pay for things like house and car repairs. The montage closes with a big event in Carl's life, his wife passes away and he is left alone in the place they have called home for many years.

Watching Carl grow from a young boy to an old man, and witnessing the major events of life allows the film to create a character with depth and solid history. He's someone we can identify with and whether you're 4 years old, or 94 years old you will connect with at least some of what you see. Although this is an animated film it is all very reflective of real life and I can certainly relate to the scenes where the couple are forced to use their savings for essentials as they postpone their dream again and again. It's an emotional journey and I, like many others, shed a tear as he sat at home unable to bring himself to look at his wife's scrapbook the section "Stuff I'm going to do".

When Carl eventually ties balloons to his house in an attempt to finally make the trip to Paradise Falls the film should become an implausible cartoon which ruins any atmosphere which had been beautifully crafted - but it doesn't. The magic remains and combines with humour to bring to your screen a colourful adventure which looks nothing less than awesome.

This is quite easily the best looking DVD I've ever seen - I've just purchased a Blu-Ray player and I can't wait to watch this in Blu-Ray because the DVD image quality was superb. The whole package is excellent - as well an incredible film there are two animated shorts; "Dug's Special Mission" - a story which ties in with Up, and "Partly Cloudy" - a very funny and heart-warming tale about making babies!

In a nutshell: Up manages to emotionally engage you in a way which thousands of other films fail to do - and it does it many times throughout the story. The movie works because the characters feel genuine and you can see much of yourself in the film. The introduction might seem a bit maudlin for a family film but it isn't, it's touching and surprisingly real. When Carl reads the final little note from his wife I was moved to tears - but it wasn't because the moment was sad, it was because it was so simplistically beautiful. By the end of the film you realise that the experiences you have throughout life are treasures worth just as much as any dream that may, or may not, come true.

great movie-was suggested that not suitable for young children but our 5 and 2 1/2 yr olds sat thru it with us and the more serious themes went completely over their heads. They just loved the balloons!
