5 out of 5 stars A must for neonatal intensive care units!   October 21, 2005

'Feeding and Nutrition in the Preterm Infant' is exceptional in its in depth review of the scientific background to this rapidly changing topic, along with good practical interpretation of the data for use in clinical practice.

I would like to recommend this excellent book to anyone interested in the health and wellbeing of the preterm infant. It is nicely written and very easy to read with summaries of important learning points at the start of each chapter. It gives a thorough review of the topic within the scope of the book.

From the beautiful outside cover to the back page the authors remind the reader of the importance of maternal milk to the wellbeing of the preterm infant and mother dyad. They offer advice to all those who have a role to play in ensuring the success of this natural process following the very unnatural event of preterm delivery.

Both editors make major contibutions to the book from their own clinical expertise along with chapters written by other health professionals with relevant expertise. Where use of breastmilk is not possible alternatives are discussed and practical solutions suggested.

A very useful addition to the bookshelves of any neonatal unit, though I doubt it will spend long on the shelf!
