5 out of 5 stars A Spendid Book   July 19, 2010

I have just finished reading this splendid book: and it is indeed an extraordinary odyssey in every sense.

It stands out as an eloquent testimony to the lifelong work of an eminent surgeon, a visionary of noble spirit and lofty ideals, and a scientist of the greatest courage and compassion with indomitable resolve to do good.

No-one who has read this book can fail to admire - indeed, to revere - the exceptional generosity and magnanimity of its author. Unlike many other professionals, he has nothing but good things to say about his colleagues and rivals. Also, unlike the biographies of other professionals, the book takes infinite pains to explain, in simple terms, highly technical and scientific issues to the layman. It is instructive, moving, and at times full of fun. It is a mirror of a man of varied interests, a passionate lover of the arts and the English language. Every chapter reflects his devotion to his family, and his pride and immense loyalty to his Jewish roots.

5 out of 5 stars Thinking outside the box   April 25, 2010

Michael Baum is both a pioneer and a visionary in the fight against Breast cancer. In this brutally honest biography, he shares the highs and lows of both the personal and professional battles he has faced in his life which continues to be dedicated to the improvement of the quality and length of lives of his cancer patients.
In this biography, we travel with Baum through the history of breast cancer, interwoven with the influences of his family, friends and Judaism, often clouded by a bittersweet relationship with the British health system.
Baum also gives the reader an insight into the role Holism in medicine and the benefits of a multi-disciplinary approach, from art, literature, mathematics and philosophy, and their contribution to better understanding both disease and treatment. He also discusses the dichotomy of hard-earned progress through dedicated cancer research and the parallel of a dramatic growth in disproven `Alternative Medicine'.
Breast cancer survivors are reminded of the debt of gratitude they owe to both Baum and other scientists who "think outside the box" and are prepared to fight for their conviction. The book is also a testimony to the patients who volunteer for clinical trials, often at great risk, so that the progress in treatments can go forward based on solid research, so that future generations can benefit from their devastating diagnosis.
A riveting and easy to read book about the life of a living legend that I just couldn't put down.

5 out of 5 stars A moving and enlightening memior   April 15, 2010

This is a touching and enlightening memoir by the person who has done more than anyone else in Britain to minimise the effects of breast cancer.
As a surgeon he pioneered research -- a very difficult thing to do -- in minimising the extent of surgery that patients need. He reserched and introduced counselling for women facing or recovering from surgery.
He pioneered the introduction of tamoxifen and its newer and better counterparts, which have had a massive effect in prolonging survival.
He has also reseasrch the effects of screening, and has shown that it taken ten years of screening to save at most one life in every ten thousant women screened.
He has shown that, controversially and contrary to expectation, most of the tumours that are detected by screening would never have caused harm, and instead lead to emotional distress and medical intervention.
