The little quirks of human life - have you ever really stopped to think about them? December 11, 2009 E. Potten (Derbyshire, UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Not much to review here, because there is so much information contained in this book that it really has to speak for itself. Suffice to say, it is just what I like best - a fascinating look at the quirky side of human psychology. Wiseman has compiled a huge amount of research on the funny little aspects of human life that we might not otherwise think twice about, weaving them together in a very accessible and humorous way that compliments the subject matter.
Do you want to find out why there are so many fishermen named Fisher, or so many people called Louis in St. Louis? The funniest joke in the world, and how you can be led to remember events that never happened? Why Friday 13th is really unlucky, and which religion produces the best Good Samaritans? How much life has really sped up over recent years, and how to tell whether someone is lying? If the answer is yes, read this book!
it's not Bad Science December 8, 2009 Darren Darvill (Nottingham, England) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
I bought this at the same time as Bad Science purely on the basis of the reviews. However, after reading both books, I really think there is a gulf in quality between the two. The underlying premise is the same for both, look at day to day life in far more detail and reveal interesting facts and ideas. Bad Science does this through scientific testing and Quirkology through psychological tests.
The thing is, Bad Science is very well written, has a strong structure and is easy to read. There is also plenty of humour - Ben's vendetta against Gillian McKeith is hilarious.
Whereas Quirkology is so dry and so virtually unreadable. It just reads like an academic paper with chapters rambling on endlessly. Without a doubt, the book uncovers some interesting facts including those listed in the reviews and a very good one about Mona Lisa's smile. However, don't think these facts are the tip of the iceberg - that really is all you get. I think you could condense the book to 30 pages and not miss anything (it would be a great book too).
So overall, interesting, but really hard work. Buy Bad Science instead.
Scaring funny book November 17, 2009 Liv I. H. Hagenberg (Norway) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I borrowed this book from my son, and being very pleased with it, I bought 4 books of the same to spread around in the family.
This book tells me how easy we are deceived. I can recommend it to anyone, it is obvious that most of us are deceived much more often than we like to think.
Brilliant November 15, 2009 Karaura (Kent, UK) Richard Wiseman has put together a wonderful antidote to fussy science. A brilliant book full of useless, random and fascinating titbits that give insight in to everyday life. A recommended read to all fans of quirky studies, useless info and of course the splendid Richard Wiseman.
Fascinating! November 9, 2009 Polly Potter (Devon, UK) I read this though really quickly, fighting off my husband even tho I had bought it for him! Some incredible anecdotes, facts and many many myths exploded. Wiseman writes well, is witty and insightful. Highly recommended!
