Not really that quirky June 27, 2010 Cathy (Yorks, England) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book sets off with good intentions but quickly becomes boring and most of the time states the obvious. If you are interested in Psychology, which is why I bought it, then there are much better books on the market - try The Road Less Travelled, or A Mind of It's Own - which is basically covering the same findings as this book but written in a far more entertaining way!
Curiouser and curiouser May 6, 2010 Peter Rooney (Ireland) This book is a fantastic book, each chapter was a self contained exploration upon a theme of weird stuff in daily lives. It points out the curious foibles of everyday thoughts and stories we tell ourself. Once I started a chapter I had to finish it, on more than one occasion it caused me to miss my bus stop. I have already lent it to my friends, definitely recommended.
Light psychology to dip into May 3, 2010 Nicola G (Devon, UK) This has been an interesting read full of plenty of simplified psychological studies. Great material for striking up weird and wonderful conversations. Easy to dip into with summaries of studies about identifying a real smile, do subliminal messages really work, why taller people are considered more successful, does your name influence your life and health etc. If you are looking for in-depth, meaty psychology then this book is not for you. For a light read or maybe a 'quirky' (!) present for the person who has everything then this book is well worth the money.
Interesting and fun! April 16, 2010 A. Wall Great book with a ton of interesting stuff that is also very funny as well. A cracking read.
Thougt it would be fun and entertaining... April 6, 2010 Country Mouse 4 out of 7 found this review helpful
From the cover and write ups, I presumed it would be an entertaining read...perhaps even fun...but not so. I am about 75% of the way through this book and I am not eager to keep picking it up.
Endless references to tests and uninspiring research on large populations that demonstrate marginally slight deviations from a normal distribution pattern....these are then presented or suggested as evidence for some attention grabbing theories on human behaviour.
A few interesting ideas but nothing that would make you want to nudge the person sitting next to you and say "Hey! Did you know that...."
I will finish it eventually because after persisting over the first 3/4 it would be a shame to miss anything good in the last few pages. Maybe he's saving the best until last.
