5 out of 5 stars Brilliant for improving social skills   July 14, 2010

I read this book over 10 years ago and it has made a huge difference in my social skills. It uses snappy headings for each piece of advice which have stuck in my head. I still actively think about them and use them when I talk to people. I was terrible at speaking to people before I read this, but this book help me realise the main places I was going wrong and how to fix it (plus a lot of practice). I think it is brilliant! A small note of caution, the book also contains a lot of advice that I feel is rather manipulative and I didn't like. I thought about knocking a star off, but decided against it because the book overall has helped me so, so much. I think you are better off just ignoring the advice that is not for you and reaping the benefits of the many excellent tips it contains.

5 out of 5 stars Used properly, you will become socially adept: used badly, your facade will be obvious.   July 9, 2010

Here is a great book which enables you to 'show others what they want to see'. I love the way the book is set out, and each idea is illustrated to perfection. I feel that, having these skills, the only important missing ingredient is personal congruence.

There are two ways to use this book: first, you can use the techniques to generate a manipulative facade, a lot of the ideas here could apply to a salesperson; second, you can use it to express a genuine attractive personality. People will eventually see through the former which gives only a short term gain, but in the case of the latter you will be more loved, valued and respected, greatly lifting your self-esteem for the rest of your life.

The slightly American feel to the book might make the gestures appear a little exaggerated to the British public, but all the ideas are universal and would probably apply equally well to any nation in any language.

If I can be very British and quote Shakespeare, ' To thine own self be true'.

5 out of 5 stars Best companion for Carnegie   July 2, 2010

A bit arrogant - and probably too pragmatic for my personal taste... Still I give Leil Lowndes this - her book is the best companion for Carnegie. Why? Simply because it explains in today's terms and using simple examples what Carnegie's abstract ideas are about in everyday communication.

Recommended for all business people.

5 out of 5 stars Defo worth getting!   June 2, 2010

I'm not a terribly confident person. I don't generally know how to handle social situations, but reading this book puts everything into perspective. It includes numerous tips about what works in social climates and what doesn't, and why people may respond to you in a particular way as result of what you say or how you act. I can't be sure yet, but I hope that the techniques will really help me in the future. They are already making me feel better at myself!

It's well-written and has a very friendly tone which gives you confidence in the text. The book is easy to read and applies to numerous social occasions and lots of great examples!

1 out of 5 stars How to talk like a politician!   May 1, 2010

I feel like this book was poorly titled, a more appropriate title would have been "How to talk your way to the top", because that seems to be the main goal for the author. Whether or not it would work is another matter.

Perhaps this book is better suited to an American audience, most of the suggested techniques are shortened to cliched phrases (including "Don't touch a cliche with a ten-foot pole" though to be fair I'm pretty sure the irony was intentional for that one), the book reads like a list of phrases which is really just a list of techniques. Some of these techniques would doubtless help some people, but as a whole the book does not really contribute anything to help a person change his life view, to gain the self esteem, or the confidence, that would enable someone to be comfortable enough with themselves to "talk to anyone". I'm of the belief that with confidence these techniques would all be entirely unnecessary

Regardless of whether you find that style of help useful, I'd still say that the book is wrongly titled. If you want to talk to anyone, to me that means you want to be the sort of person who can start up a conversation with anyone, be they a colleague, a passenger beside you on a flight, or the pretty girl you always see on the bus but don't know how to approach. This book seems more intend on trying to make you the sort of person who can impress the boss, or the wealthy or powerful, at a social event. To make you that sort of person who, regardless of actual ability, is always on friendly terms with their superiors whether they like them or not. You know the sort, all style but no substance? Well, that last bit is unfair, but it's probably true to say that this book has more to do with aiding ambition than it has to do with social interaction.
