| Customer Reviews: A Trip Down Memory Lane January 11, 2010 Mr. R. H. Lefroy (Somerset England) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I guess I have read every one of the Racing Post columns reproduced in this book yet the fact that I kept smiling, or laughing, reveals a timeless quality in the jottings of the late Clement Freud.
That we shall not see his like again there can be no doubt. The charm of this book lies in the reminders of times gone by and an older man trying to accept changing times without compromising the standards he believed in.
Above all, those who love horse racing, and a gamble, belong to an association. One where the members all recognise one another yet share a resignation that all suffer from an irredeemable weakness: but one that allows a very special pleasure on those rare occasions when relieving the old enemy, the bookmaker, of a large bundle of notes.
Clement Freud was shrewd, and hard working, enough to have sources of income that allowed him to enjoy his horse racing, good food and wine, and good company.
His book shares those joys, along with a less joyful acceptance of the trials of the travel required to visit far flung racecourses and a lively account of what he found there.
You put it down in the knowledge that there is no more to come: but maybe you will revisit it next year. Christmas is a good time for memories, especially ones like this.
A Good Read August 1, 2009 Annie 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
This book made me laugh out loud several times, and I have repeated some of the jokes and stories for other people to enjoy. I just wish I had taken copies of Racing Post when he was writing - he is a great loss to the fund of humourous writing. The book is excellent to the extent that I saved it up as I didn't want to finish it - it really was a treat.

Excellent funny book covering a lifetime of racing's quirky side. Keep it by your bedside for the times when you want to go to sleep on a laugh!
