5 out of 5 stars The book for when you don't know what to cook   July 3, 2010
Mags (Wales)
I've had this book for a while now and it is a little different from the others on my shelf. This is no glossy TV chef book full of sexy food pictures and using hard to obtain ingredients. Instead what this offers are some great recipes for those days when your mind has gone blank and your children are being fussy.

I use the muffin recipes over and over again and the chicken and pasta bake recipe is sheer genius.

I don't like to use cook-in sauces, I prefer to cook from scratch. This book is great for those days when I'm too tired to think what to cook and have hungry mouths to feed. There are some great ideas for breakfasts for when your kids clamour for 'not cereal again' and for packed lunches too.

This book is so choc full of family favourites that it lives in the kitchen. My hardback glossy chef books live on the bookcase. Enough said.

If mothers read this book and heeded its excellent ideas and economical menu ideas we would be rid of fat teletubby kids who are the future drain on the resousces of the Health Service. A must read for any mother !!!

5 out of 5 stars essential to my collection   February 18, 2010

There is a lot of useful information in this book as well as lots of recipes for really good traditional food (that I grew up on) as well as more modern recipes including curries. I was brought up in an environment where the only way to have a pie was if you baked it yourself, my mother would never have bought one from a shop nor could she have afforded too. She showed me from a young age how to turn one pound of mince into 3 family sized pies and this book works along the same lines, producing good home cooked food on a budget with all the taste and none of the artificial additives. I think this book should be the basis of cookery classes in school so that where some parents are failing to teach their children proper home cooking and budgeting this book would go a long way to redress the balance. Sorry if that sounds like a lecture, it wasn't meant to. I think this book is a must have even for an accomplished cook like myself. There are recipes for breakfasts, lunches, dinners, puddings, snacks, soups, nibbles and at the end of the book are 5 weekly meal plans for dinners listing the ingredients you need, to help prevent waste and enable you to budget more effectively. How many of us have bought things with the best intention of cooking them only to throw them in the bin when they have gone out of date? At this price you would be mad not to buy this book.
