3 out of 5 stars Psychology popcorn   July 29, 2010
Mrs. S. Biddulph (London, UK)
I enjoyed this book but it left me very unsatisfied. It is supremely populist and often simplistic. I have to admit I was taken in by the adverts for it and the eye catching cover. It did make me think and assess aspects of my behaviour and what makes me happy, but I discovered very little. A lot of it I found blindingly obvious and overall for me the book lacked insight. It skimmed the surface but never delved deep. I don't think psychology can be distilled into 59 second-long soundbites.

5 out of 5 stars If you have any interest at all in self-improvement - read this book and do what it suggests   July 23, 2010
T. J. Cooke-Davies
Before reading this book, which I bought as a part of an Amazon "bundle", I was somewhat sceptical about "yet another self-help book". However, once I had read the first few chapters, and carried out the very clear and simple exercises, I found that it really does deliver on its promises. It is a useful book for both sorting the wheat from the chaff as far as self-help advice is concerned, and for making a few small changes in your life that will add up to a big (and positive) impact on its overall quality.

5 out of 5 stars Straight to what matters   July 19, 2010
Mr. S. W. Butterworth (Ipswich, UK)
I have read plenty of self help books over the last few years but this one stands out. Why? Because even within the first few pages there is easy to follow steps to becoming happier and all backed up with very sound scientifically proven data points. I'm not sure what more you could want from a self help book. It tells you what to do and why the advice has been proven to work, simple as that. Excellent! If I was to be critical of one thing it would be the general design and layout of the book. For instance I think that the action points could stand out more from the rest of the text so you can scan back through the content more easily.

5 out of 5 stars readable & evidence based self development   July 18, 2010
Robert Firth (Melbourne, Australia)
Recounts fascinating studies to cut through the intuitive hypothesising that dominates the self help industry to show evidence for what actually makes a measurable difference. The answers often surprise and the stories are entertaining and stimulating.
Highly recommended for inquisitive and open minded individuals.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant. Evidenced. Pithy.   July 13, 2010

I loved this.
A counterbalance to all those self indulgent self help books (mantra: 'I am NOT a victim') Wiseman reviews the research literature to discover what really works.
Smiling, getting on with things and writing down the good / bad things which happen are all simple, easy activities to soothe the mind.
Wiseman includes ideas for quickly developing creativity and models for developing a good plan which are easy to adopt.
And, what's more, there's masses of relevant evidence from proper, interesting research.
This book could reduce your stress levels and make you a happier person - and you'll find it a fascinating read.
It left me wondering just how I could get some funding to run a series of curious experiments......
