5 out of 5 stars Great product   September 5, 2010

I'm really happy with the product. Easy to use and very very effective. I bought the Rio Salon laser in the past and I didn't see any difference (without considering the fact that you cannot do large areas with it). This is the third time I use it and I'm amazed with the results. Excellent purchase.

Ive had professional laser hair removal - 6 sessions which cost me £1600 and although i had hair reduction, i still had to keep going to sessions - so i decided to buy my own Laser
I think it works just as good as the salon, if not better. plus, u dont have to keep paying each time, u can do body sections in your own time and in the comfort of your own home, and its painless
certain sections can be awkward, like backs of legs and full bikini but u get the hang of it....if u want to mark out sections, use a white pencil or something similarly pale - dont use a biro as the laser will pick out that pigment and burn u - similar to tattooing the biro onto ur skin.....(i stupidly did this, and had ridiculous marks on my leg for a month, tho they did eventaully go away)
u end up without any hairs in between sessions....u are basically hair free the whole time...

3 out of 5 stars Is it really worth nearly £400?? Honest review   August 19, 2010

I have pale skin and very dark body hair, which is very strong and grows very quickly. I have tried all the other hair removal methods - shaving doesn't even last a full day, creams dont work, epilation takes forever and waxing lasts about a week.....
I was really excited to read the reviews about the Lumea and persuaded my husband to buy me one for my birthday.
I started to use the Lumea on 18th May, so at 2 week intervals I have used it 7 times now (14 weeks)
I have only used it on my underarms and bikini area for now and have had mixed results.
My underarms are about 70% hair free, but I still have to shave every other day to remove the remaining spikes.
My bikini area is patchy!!! My actual bikini line is practically hair free, but everywhere else has some patches of no hair and more patches of normal growth.
The reason for this I think is because the Lumea does not seem to work very well on settings below 4.
I use 4 on my underarms and bikini line, but cant bear the burn/sting of anything over 2/3 on other 'bikini' areas. Also the part of the Lumea that touches the skin, gets very hot very quickly and it becomes unbearable to hold the device against sensitive areas. I suppose you could get around this by taking a break between doing different areas, but as it only takes about 3 mins to do each armpit, and 10 mins to do the bikini area, it seems daft to wait around for it to cool down............

I would add that I have disregarded a couple of the contraindications........
I have had skin reactions to the sun before and I also have psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis (which is a systemic immune system response), and I have suffered with a varicose vein before.
I have not suffered from any skin reactions whilst using the Lumea, but I have had more frequent flare ups with the arthritis, which could just be coincidental - but is something to bear in mind if you have any immune system conditions.
The Lumea comes in a totally sealed pack that you can return after reading the contraindications and user manual - so if you think it is not for you, then you are not left £400 out of pocket.

I reckon (in a paranoid way) that I am using a device that could possibly trigger cancers...... especially as I am zapping UV light into areas where there are major lymph glands...... The things we do to get rid of hair!

It is a real shame that the Lumea cannot be used on the face.

Overall I think this is a good product, but I could think of better things to spend £400 on - especially as there are similar, cheaper products out there now.

4 out of 5 stars Where to buy?   August 16, 2010

Just bought mine in Boots where I paid £399.99 however I also received 1596 points on my Advantage Card (equivalent to £15.96). So unless the price drops again here, and it has dropped down already from the £399.99 original price, then you may be better off paying full price in Boots and getting the Advantage card points.

It's charging now, haven't used it yet so will update in the future on the product side.

USAGE Update
Read all the instructions twice and shave the areas to be treated really well before you use it!
Getting used to handling it seems to be the hardest part - it is pretty heavy. I started out on lowest setting & worked my way up to level 4 (level 4/5 was recommended for my skin/hair type). It is hard to wield at first and I found it tricky to work out the best method of systematically doing my legs with it. Under arms and bikin area were easier even though I was a bit scared at first that it might hurt, it didn't. Getting the right amount of overlap was the main 'hit and miss' part for me. I think when I do the follow up treatments it will get easier. For hard to reach places, like the back of your legs, you'll probably need a partner to help.
I will persevere because it did cost a lot of money but it will be worth it in the end. Don't expect instant results, it's going to take quite a few treatments before the results will start to show. I was worried it might be painful but I can honestly say apart from the odd twinge where I hadn't shaved well enough, it was a pain-free experience.

4 out of 5 stars My opinion of the Philips Lumea   July 31, 2010

My Philips Lumea arrived yesterday. It was securely packaged and I couldnt wait to open it and and find out all about it. I had soon opened it and was reading the instructions on how to use it. The Philips Lumea is a straight forward device to use, after reading the instructions, i took the device from the box, plugged in the charger and left it charging up whilst I went out shopping. When I got back home, the device was ready to use. I shaved my bikini line and legs ready for treatment and was now ready to try out this hair removing device. First of all I used the Lumea on my bikini line, and found it easy to use. You have to switch the power button on and select the level of power you want from 1-5. I would personally start from power 1, test it on your bikini line and if thats ok, move up to power 2 and see if thats ok. Move up to the level you feel most comfortable with. Next hold and place the window of the device on the area to treat, hold down firmly until a green strip of light appears at the back of the device, this lets you know that the device is ready to treat. Next press the switch to deliver the light pulse. There will then be a bright flash of light and a warm feeling. You may also feel a bit of a sting if the power level is to high. If so adjust and lower the power level. The way to use the device is to start at the top of the bikini line and work your way downwards. You will know where you have been because the device leaves a slight mark where it has been so work down from that. I personally dont think there is any need for white eye liner pencils to keep track of where you have been. After a full recharge, the device only lasts about 15 minutes so as soon as the power runs out, put it back on to charge ready to treat your legs. After I had finished treating my bikini line, I then did both of my legs using the same technique but found I had to use a higher power level for my legs. Immediately after the treatment was completed, my legs started to itch a bit but not too much. The next morning I found my legs were itching even more than the previous day, and I noticed what looks like a shaving rash appeared on both legs. I would recomment E45 cream to soothe the itching if it occurs and the rash. There is no itching in the bikini area, only what looks like a shaving rash. I will now have to wait several days to see full results and whether or not hair is shedded like other users have said and whether or not there is a huge hair reduction. I would not recommend you use this device just before going out for the night just incase of a rash and itching. However this may not happen to anyone else, it may just be a side effect that I experienced myself. Overal this is a powerful machine and I really do hope that it does what it says it does, I will come back in a few weeks to give you all an update on whether or not it works. Even though I have a rash at the moment, I feel quite optimistic about this product.
